About Dr. Ahearn

Michael A. Ahearn, MD, is the owner and one of the general medicine physicians practicing at Ahearn & Associates Medical Center in Kewanee, Illinois.

Dr. Ahearn was born in 1959 in Mexico City, the oldest of ten kids. Dr. Ahearn was raised in Acapulco, Mexico, but his interest in medicine and passion for helping others brought him back to his hometown when he attended the University of La Salle in Mexico City. He graduated with his Physician-Surgeon degree in 1982 with the highest honors. In 1987, he completed his family practice residency at St Luke’s and Mercy Hospitals in Davenport, Iowa. He then became board-certified in family practice, emergency room, and integrative & holistic medicine. In 2010, he graduated from Harvard Medical School with a certification in acupuncture.

For the past 30 years, Dr. Ahearn has lived in Kewanee, Illinois, where he’s run/owned Ahearn & Associates Medical Center since 2003.

Outside of running Ahearn & Associates Medical Center, Dr. Ahearn also visits 24 nursing homes and acts as Medical Director for several of them. Maintaining a passion for the emergency room, he still works in the ER department at Hammond- Henry Hospital Geneseo, IL and OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee.

Dr. Ahearn likes to volunteer and has contributed his time and expertise to Hospital De La Familia in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala, in 2007, 2009, and 2017. Additionally, in August 2010, Dr. Ahearn visited the town of Ukwala in Kenya, Africa, to assist the Matibabu Health Clinic & Tiba Foundation. Today, Dr. Ahearn is in contact with his fellow doctors in Ukwala to help whenever they need him.

Despite all the formal training Dr. Ahearn has received, what has helped him better serve his patients has been traveling to foreign countries and helping those in need; this has really opened his eyes to a new world of medicine. It’s allowed him to take in new cultures, treat patients who usually wouldn’t receive care, and learn to practice with minimal resources.

During his medical career, Dr. Ahearn has received several awards, including the Physician of the Year in 1998 & 1999 by the Illinois American Academy of Family Practice, the National Leadership Award in 2003 by the Republican Party for Health Care Reform, and the Physician of the Year 2004 & 2005 by the NRCC Physician’s Advisory Board in Washington DC.

In 2012, Dr. Ahearn was recognized by the American Association of Family Practice for his 25 years of membership, helping establish the specialty of family medicine, maintaining high standards and principles of medicine, and his commitment to providing comprehensive quality care to the American public. Emergency Physicians Staffing Solutions also recognized Dr. Ahearn with the “Most Valuable Physician Award” in 2015.

Dr. Ahearn is also a faculty speaker for Novartis Pharmaceuticals and has participated in trialing three new medications for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson, and Chronic Kidney Failure. He’s also served as a principal investigator for numerous protocols.

On October 5, 2013, Dr. Ahearn and the Ahearn & Associates Medical Center team organized the First Community Walk to Stop Diabetes in the Kewanee Area. The event was a resounding success and made the Top Ten Community Walk list for nationwide fundraising.

In his leisure time, Dr. Ahearn enjoys reading, listening to music, watching movies, and spending time with his lovely wife Rebecca, stepson Austin, Bella, and his other family and friends.
